Coiling method is traditionally taught at Japanese ceramics schools around Japan. My father also taught me this technique and he did not allow me to go on electric wheel for years before I mastered this.

 

Coiling method is a great step to learn basics of pottery. Skills you acquire through this process is directly transferable to when you go on an electric wheel. It is advisable you start off Japanese pottery with this coiling method.
